Chapter 11

Sebastian scrubbed himself clean and flopped into bed. He lay his arm over his eyes and tried to calm himself. Charles Hawkins was going to be the death of him. Little by little he had come out of that schoolmaster’s shell, and in doing so, had only made his infatuation worse. Because now he knew that beneath that gloomy frosty exterior was an intelligent, kind, passionate man. His passion for his businesses was catching, and the discussions that they had shared had fired Sebastian’s imagination in a way that nothing ever had. He knew that part of his interest stemmed from the fact that they got along famously, and at times there was something almost like respect in Hawkins’ eyes as they talked.

He’d managed to avoid reading anything, despite numerous attempts on Hawkins’ attempts to get him to, but he knew in his heart it was only a matter of time before he realised the truth. He wished now he had said something from the off. Told him he couldn’t read when he didn’t really care about his good opinion. He was forced to admit, it was too late now. He cared.

The thought of losing the respect that he saw in his eyes, and seeing that replaced with scorn, or disappointment, tore at his insides. It was the prospect of losing his good opinion that stopped him from pursuing anything more physical with him too. There were times when Sebastian would have staked his life on the fact that Hawkins found him attractive, wanted something more, but the possibility that he could be wrong, and he’d been wrong in the past, stopped him. If he was wrong…He pushed his face into his arm. If he was wrong, he really wouldn’t be able to bear it. It probably wasn’t a good idea anyway. Sebastian had never bedded anyone that he actually cared about. Whose opinion really counted. He groaned and flopped onto his back, covering his eyes with his arm. He had a horrible, horrible feeling that he was falling in love. What an idiot.

He lay for a while, alternately aching for Hawkins and berating himself for his stupidity, when he heard the familiar sound of footsteps on the gravel. He listened for a moment, and heard Hawkins clear his throat. Sebastian rolled off the bed and stood in the window, again out of sight, again naked, again sporting an erection.

It was breezy out. Hawkins sat in his usual spot and rubbed his face. Wind ruffled his hair as he sat back, laid his arms over the back of the bench, and turned his face up to the moon, and when he held his hands out, Sebastian realised that it was raining. Soft, almost nothing rain, but Hawkins took closed his eyes, took off his spectacles, held up his face up and let it fall on him.

Sebastian made a decision. He grabbed his breeches and yanked them on, pulled his shirt over his head, stamped his feet into his boots, and headed for the door.
